My Interview
-
What topics do you work on?
I am interested in how we can better understand brain development during childhood and adolescence and particularly, I am trying to find out whether the fact that the brain still develops during this time also means that we can influence and shape development.
What methods do you use?
I use questionnaires, computer tasks, eye-tracking methods and neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Who was your favourite teacher?
I was lucky to learn from and work with many inspiring people, but the person who initially got be interested in understanding the brain and how brain functions relate to behaviour was my professor for biology at Frankfurt, Prof Sireteanu.
Me and my work
In a nutshell, my research looks at how improving social cognitive abilities during childhood and adolescence relate to concurrent functional and structural brain development, and whether these developmental changes differ in anxious children.
Typical day
On a typical office day, I am analysing data, writing manuscript, research grant applications and meeting students and colleagues. I also try to go to most scientific talks that are given at the University, as there is always something new to discover.
On days when I am testing participants, I am usually at the scanning centre, setting up testing, meeting participants and their parents and running brain scans.
