My Mega Moderating Moment:
Getting to the end of Learning Zone 2015 and seeing all the great discussions that were had… Hoping for another mega moment when Learning Zone 2018 is done and dusted!
What topics do you work on?
I currently research the cognitive and neural underpinnings of science and maths reasoning in adolescence. In particular I’m investigating misconceptions in these subjects and the different cognitive skills that might enable effective reasoning about counterintuitive science and maths concepts.
What methods do you use?
I use behavioural, fMRI, and classroom-based methods.
Who was your favourite teacher?
My A Level form tutor and Sociology teacher who treated us like adults, insisting on calling us women instead of girls.
Me and my work
I am passionate about educational neuroscience, which involves doing scientific research, but also trying to connect that research to education. It’s a challenge!
Typical day
Meeting with teachers in school
Observing science and maths lessons
Running statistical analyses
Teaching undergraduates statistics
Writing for my thesis, a paper, or a blog post
Having meetings to plan next steps
