Students won’t properly engage if you don’t present things in an attractive format. I hate to advise the teacher-as-entertainer route, but being an engaging teacher is a key starting point to get your students motivated.
As far as memory and learning are concerned, my research, and that of others, indicates that deep learning is key – so having a proper interest in the subject. Students need to focus, engage, think deeply and reflect. Rote learning might get you through, but it won’t earn you the top marks.
Using stimulating and engaging examples is always helpful – getting students to think about things in different ways. We know from psychology that approaching things from different perspectives really aids a fuller learning experience.
I would imagine English literature offers all kinds of opportunities for reflection, role-playing, mirroring, and other things can would get students to the heart of the subject.
