Here comes Topic 2: Attention, Reward and Motivation

This fortnight we have 5 scientists available to talk to about the facts behind the headlines on Topic 2: Attention, Reward and Motivation. Speak to Emma about how rewards could help children learn to regulate their behaviour. Ask Gaia why some young children experience attentional difficulties, and how this might impact on learning. Talk to Mike about how cognitive control differs in teenagers compared to adults. Quiz Matt about the brain circuits involved in attention, reward, and motivation. Chat with Geneviève about how cognitive control can help low ability students to succeed. Live Chat Log in to join the live chats with neuroscientists and psychologists about how young people learn: Tuesday 23rd January, 8pm-9pm Thursday 1st February, 4pm-5pm Get the dates in your diary now, we’ll remind you before each chat. ASK Questions Post questions to the scientists at any time over the next fortnight using ASK. For example: “What does research say about pupils fiddling whilst  learning. … Continue reading

Learning and Remembering #2 – Chat Transcript – 16/01/18

ModKathryn: Welcome everyone to this week’s live chat! Joem: Hi I’m Joe, I was wondering if you could explain the connection between short-term and long-term memory and which is most important for helping students revise for exams? Lucy: They’re both important really. Students will be retrieving information from long-term memory (ie stuff they’ve learned) in exams but it gets into/out of long-term memory via short-term memory Jessie: That’s a really interesting question. To lay down more durable long-term memories requires consolidation and integration and relies on the hippocampus. Sleep seems to be important for consolidation and therefore long-term learning. Yana: I am not sure about picking short-term memory versus long-term memory in terms of which is “more important”, because they each have very important roles to play in learning. I think of short-term memory as mainly to do with attention. If students are not attending to the information they are … Continue reading

What’s new in the Learning Zone?

Live chat, 4-5pm today The neuroscientists and psychologists are online from 4-5pm today to answer your questions about how young people learn. Login or register with social media to chat. We hope to see you in the chat shortly! The topic of Learning and Remembering runs from Monday 8th – 21st January 2018, so you can continue to delve deeper into this discussion following the chat. Interesting questions from week 1 I was wondering from your research if there were any obvious techniques/methods that you have see/suggested that allow students to ignore distractions? Is there a connection between athletic ability and language proficiency? What is cell phone/tablet use in early childhood doing to the rate of literacy acquisition? What is happening in the brain to make it easy for babies to learn language than older children? How does this process look in the brain in sign-language-only households? What about bilingual households? … Continue reading

Here is the Learning Zone Evaluation Report!

It has taken a bit of time, but here it is: click on the picture for our shiny Learning Zone Evaluation Report, filled with pie charts, quotes, bar graphs, and Wordles. Or you can have a quick look at the summary below. The Learning Zone was successful, both teachers and scientists found it a valuable experience. We created a conversation between teachers and experts on the science of learning: 40 scientists and almost 300 teachers registered to take part. The Learning Zone site was visited by 7,000 users during the event. Pages in the Zone were viewed over 33,000 times. Scientists and teachers valued the event. 89% of teachers and 94% of scientists would participate again. Teachers improved their knowledge about the brain and learning. 66% of the teachers agreed that “their understanding about the brain and/or learning had improved”. Improving knowledge may not lead to more confidence or enable more informed decision-making. … Continue reading

Week three – Updates!

We’ve just finished another great week, the site is continuing to buzz with questions and discussions.. We’ve had over 20,000 visits, which is fantastic, this has meant we are able to extend the event by 2 weeks, the Learning Zone will now finish on Friday 22nd May. Teachers, have you told your colleagues about the event? They can log in using social media or the registration form. There have already been lots of questions through from other teachers which have started lots of interesting discussions. The scientists have also been including lots of links to articles, publications and resources – check the responses and discussions. We also wanted to say that there will not be a live chat on the bank holiday Monday, but instead we will open it on Wednesday 6th May at 8pm. We’d love to know who can make it, so please leave a comment below if … Continue reading

Chat Highlights – 27th April 2015

Monday night’s live chat had a lot of interesting questions and answers.. Including lots of links, which we wanted to share with those who weren’t able to make it. Here are some of the good bits. Mrs_Vale (Kim): I find the idea of bring your own device to class very enticing and have been allowing m BTEC year 11s to use Google on their phones despite this being against school practice. i would like some inks to read and put in front of the senior team. SusannaMarie: @Kim, theres quite a bit of research about the value of collecting your own data and hands on learning for improving student’s motivation and their test scores. SusannaMarie: It’s important that students are given some guidance, for instance teaching them how to judge which websites are reputable. If you ask the question again in the main ASK area I will search out some … Continue reading
